First time I've really driven this long on the highway, but the traffic was pretty good. Changing over from the 400 to the 401 was an interesting experience. That's where the traffic was iffy, but I got through well enough. I'm pretty fucking good at highway driving.

I parked at the Yorkdale mall, as one usually does when getting on the subway at the Yorkdale station. However, I had no idea where I was going. Didn't know where to park, didn't know where the station was. It was pretty much a mess. I found a parking spot, but had no clue as to where the station was. I wandered around for quite a while before I got to the subway.

And then walking from Union station to the convention centre was weird. Apparently there's this "Skywalk" shit that takes you straight to the building, but I didn't know. I wandered the street, and finally found it. Thankfully I was going in the right direction, and didn't have to walk back or anything. Fucking Toronto is confusing.

Got to the Expo around 4:30. Wandered around a little bit, being overwhelmed by the size and chaos of the convention centre. It was pretty ridiculous. Then I tried to find where Brian Bolland (artist of 'The Killing Joke') was signing, and did so successfully. They weren't letting anyone in, though, because Tim Sale was still doing his session.

Eventually (frankly, I don't know how), I saw a friend of mine, Geekers, and met up with him. Wandered about with him aimlessly, until I was able to line up for Bolland. He went off to some panel, but ended up skipping or something. Gave me a copy of The Killing Joke to get signed for him.

After waiting in line for about an hour, I got my book signed. Brian seems like a really nice guy, though I think I may have seemed a little retarded as I had no idea what I was doing. I shook his hand and smiled, and gave him the books. I was going to ask for a sketch, but again, I'm retarded. I was totally overwhelmed and timid... *sigh*

Afterwards, I just wandered around until Geekers called, and then we wandered around some more. Talked about some comics, looked at some interesting booths, and just doddled around until about 8:00. And then I left. I missed out on some panels I was interested in, but oh well. It was a pretty good first day. I was fucking tired.

When I got back to Yorkdale, I was so fucking lost. I had no idea where I was going, where I parked, or anything. Like, when I parked there earlier in the day, I had a hard enough time trying to figure out where the damn subway station was. This was ridiculous. I don't think I actually found the car until 9:10. I wandered around the mall, a number of times, trying to find the exit from which I came. It took me fucking forever.

But I found the van, called my mom, and headed home. It was actually a much smoother trip home than it was in the afternoon. Less traffic, and just a calmer drive. It was fun. I was pretty tired, but I kept awake by singing and such.

Got home safely, and then went to sleep. Early morning ahead of me.

SATURDAY:
Jesus fucking christ. I wish I had relished in the relative calmness of Friday. Sure, I didn't get up to much, but compared to today it was a fucking ghost town. Saturday is fucking ridiculous. There were so many fucking people. It was retarded.

I can basically some up the entire day with one little sentence:
The best "waiting-in-line" convention I've ever been to.

Ri-fuckin-diculous.

So, here's the story. I went down with a couple friends, as expected. Early in the morning, as we expected a somewhat higher volume of people. His dad drove us to Yorkdale (and parked in the correct spot, and knew where he was going), and we took the subway down to the convention centre. We walk to the place, get inside, and on the ticket-merchant floor we could already see the chaos. His dad spouted some crude comments, and mentioned a few times how ridiculous and retarded it was. We got in line for tickets, gave us money, and left.

Now, I already had my ticket, but I didn't want to leave them alone in the long-ass fucking line. So I chilled with them. It was fun, we made fun of all the crazy fucking anime cosplayers, commented on some of the badass superhero costumes, and ogled the sexy ones (seriously, Black Canary... holy shit). Oh, and I couldn't tell you how many times I told the furries to "yiff in hell". Seriously, there were so many furries. It was gross... and the worst part was that I think they took pleasure in my mockery. I eventually just resorted to yelling "FUCKING FURRIES!" every time I saw one walking by.

But yeah, after waiting in line for over an hour (I'd describe the lines to you, but it was ridiculous), we finally get downstairs. We find that we have have to wait in line to actually get onto the show floor. Thankfully we were able to unknowingly cut in line (and no one said anything to us, so it was all good), and we got in. It was incredibly busy. Some of the paths were uncrossable. The main rows were shoulder-to-shoulder, sweaty geeky body pressed up against sweat geeky body. It was awful.

We walk around a little bit, but my friends want to see the people from Smallville (Lex and Kara were there), so we head over to the celebrity autograph tables. Sure enough, Michael Rosenbaum was sitting there signing autographs. Long line, but they were insistent on meeting him. I wanted to go see Victor Lucas at 1, so I told them I'd chill with them in line for a little while, and then head over and see if I could meet him. Well, Victor's line was pretty big too, so I just sort of caught a glimpse of him, and then headed back.

We waiting for Rosenbaum for a while. A long while. We got in line pretty much when we got in, so it must have been about 12:45. We were really close, and then around 1:40 one of the expo volunteers tells us that he is stopping for a little bit as he has a "photo-op" session at 2. Understandable, but kinda annoying as we were pretty much at the front of the line. They say Rosenbaum will be back around 3, and tells us that we can wait.

A lot of people left, but we decide to wait. I think at this point we were third or fourth from the front. They really wanted to meet him, and I didn't really want to wander the convention alone, so I stuck around. One of the brothers and I went off to get food, but even the food court was packed. We didn't even get to sit and eat, we just brought the food back and ate it in line. We waited the hour, and anxiously waiting for Michael to show up.

He didn't. We waited, and by this time we were first in line. They finally said to us at around 3:45 "he has a panel at 4, so he'll probably come back after that". Awesome, another hour of waiting. I actually wanted to see the panel, but I felt that all this waiting, I needed to meet him; I needed to get the autograph.

Laura Vandervoort (Kara) was signing autographs a couple rows down. My friends wanted to see her too, and they sent out a "last call" for her session (as she was heading to the panel too). Apparently her line was going really quickly, so I offered to hold fort at the front of the line while they went over to meet her. They were over there for maybe ten minutes. They talked with her a little bit, got the autograph, and a photo. It was crazy-fast.

The friends came back, and we kept waiting. I offered to take them one at a time quickly around the con, just so that their entire experience wasn't just waiting in some god-forsaken line. I got some pretty neat swag, about equal to Friday's. A DVD, a couple posters, and a few comics. Checked out some awesome booths, ogled at the cute girls, and fanboyed when we came across celebrity-like people walking around (Tim Sale, for example).

We got back, with about ten minutes before 5. We waited, again. I expected Rosenbaum to be late again, though I hoped he wouldn't be too late. We had to leave at around 5:15. Eventually, he showed up; it must have been like 5:10. He was rushed though, he was leaving at fucking 6. And there was a big fucking line. My friend wanted him to say his famous line "I am the villain of the story!" into the camera, but that sort of pissed off his agent, and they said no.

We shook his hand and got a picture signed (one, with all of our names on it). We were hoping to get a photo with him, but they were rushed, and so were we. Again, like with Bolland, I wish I was more assertive. I should have told him how long we waiting, and asked for the damn photo. Oh well, not much we can do now.

And with that, we left the con. Unfortunately I didn't get to do all of the stuff I wanted to do (or nearly any of it, actually), but it was still a fun and interesting experience. I had hoped to get Tim Sale to sign my "Long Halloween", but that didn't happen (we missed his morning session, and I didn't want to approach him at his booth in Artist Alley). Next year will be better; I can only hope that the guests will be just as cool, and we are more prepared.

I didn't get to go on Sunday, but it's not much of a loss. Kinda wish I had, but I can only imagine it to have been pretty crazy anyway. And even so, the highway was closed coming out of Barrie, so it would have been difficult anyway.

Some current projects.

Well, it has been a while, hasn't it? In my absence, I've been busy with other stuff on the internet. You can watch my vlogs, which I do on a semi-regular basis. And I will be starting up a podcast with Tack, called "Retcast" in the coming weeks, which should be fun. You can check out the page here. I've also set up the RSS feed to be displayed on the sidebar.

As a final note, some friends of mine posted a short film on YouTube. We had planned this film, and actually started filming, quite a while back, but we decided to scrap what we had and start over. It is almost widely expected of men to hold back tears, but even women hide their faces when they cry. A great example of this expected unemotional mask is the military. During ceremonies and such, the soldiers must hold blank faces. Emotion is seen as unprofessional and immature. It's as though emotion is seen as an element of weakness. I think it's one of the main aspects of our humanity, and should be embraced.

Though people argue that pets show emotion, it has no real grounds for argument. It's pretty much widely accepted that the animal kingdom thrives on instinct and impulse, therefore reassuring the aforementioned uniqueness that emotion plays for our humanity. Our emotions define us, yet an excess expression of such is shunned and looked down upon.

I totally suffer from the inability to show emotion. I really wish I could, but it has been hardwired into my brain. Since puberty, I can count the number of times I've cried on one hand, and I've been very emotionally detached from my family and many of my friends. Unless I'm talking about something for which I'm passionate, conversation is either monotonous or nonexistent. It's truly a terrible thing, but it is something that we lose as we develop in the economically-driven world that we live in.

I watched a video a while ago which sparked this idea. I'm certain there is much more to discuss, but I've put myself out there. I truly wish that our emotion can be seen as something beautiful and unique, but I doubt that will ever be the case. Keep dreaming, friends; keep smiling, keep crying, keep laughing, keep expressing oneself.

Can't Sleep

So, I'm pretty much only posting because Roosterteeth is down... Makes me angry that I can't waste time on my forums.

Anyway, I'm very tired. I've found it relatively difficult to sleep for the past little bit. The past couple days I didn't go to sleep until about 6am. Yeah, brutal. Tonight, however, I'm staying up all night. I'll go to bed early Sunday night in hopes of getting a wicked-thorough sleep. Let's hope.

I've tried this before, and it didn't work out so well. Mostly because I got really tired and took a nap. Unfortunately said nap turned out to go for about five hours as opposed to the original plan of one or two. This time I'm determined to stay awake all day and hit the sack around 8 or 9.

That's about it... I'm really bored, and I don't want to go to sleep. I can't go to sleep, I need to fix this... Alright, I'm going to go take a shower, then maybe read a little bit.

Vlogs and such

As I mentioned in my previous post, I've been doing video journals. It's been a while.

But honestly, I don't know if anyone actually reads this, so what does it matter...

It has been a long time since I've updated. Almost two months, wow. Well, shit has been busy. School is stressful; life is changing; brain overloaded. I went through a minor bout of depression about a month ago, which is still somewhat hanging off my back. It was a pretty brutal and scary time for me... But, I'm pretty good for the time being.

As for school, I'm just extremely unmotivated. It seems ever since midterms I've just been in the whole "fuck it" mindset. I've had mountainous amounts of work, most of which I have not done. I just haven't been able to bring myself to do it. I've been distracted, and just overall unmotivated. But, it's getting into crunch time. I'm hoping I can get back into the rhythm soon.

I've tried really hard recently to keep in contact with a lot of friends that I've lost touch with. A lot of people from highschool that I sort of regret not hanging out and talking with more often. This whole depression and change in situation seems to have caused me to regret a lot of stuff. It's like I've started to look at my life from a different angle... I'm telling you now, growing up is scary, confusing, and unexpected.

Well, I've avoided sleep for long enough. Hopefully writing this was a good remedy for my insomnia. G'night, dear readers.

-Brandon

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://bspanis.blogspot.com/2007/11/oh-hey-there-its-been-while.html' title='Oh, hey there. Hopefully I can finish my part of the first chapter by the end of the weekend.

I also got my statement for the first year of university (tuition, and residence). I was tired of copying and pasting from my other stuff, so I just stopped. I figured I'd give you few readers an update.

Not a whole lot has been going on. Work is pretty good. It's monotonous and I'm running out of stuff to do, but I'm making money so I'm happy. As for money, university costs a lot. I need to get some stuff sorted out soon, or else I may lose my spot at York...

I had a party last night, which went well. There were fewer people than last time, so it was much less chaotic. I was happy with how it turned out. Hopefully I can have another one or two before I head off to York.

I got my first credit card last week. It's exciting. I'll be buying some stuff online in the next couple weeks, which is one of the main reasons why I got it. I'm getting a Zune and some clothes from J!NX, which is pretty awesome.

I still haven't decided whether to frosh or not... Depends how much I've made by that point, I guess. We'll see.

-Brandon

First Day

So I worked my first day today. It was good. Very relaxed, a nice start.

It's a little bit tedious, but I'll get used to it. I don't really have a concrete job, I'm just there to help out with whatever. So this first week will basically be adaptation.

We started out talking for about an hour regarding the company, what they do, and what my responsibilities will be. Then I was taught how to use the contact manger program that they use, which I would need to familiarize myself with rather quickly because they just purchased a newer version.

I then spent the rest of the morning checking and updating contacts and familiarizing myself with the program so that I could import all of the old contacts (and there are a fuck-ton) when we made the upgrade. Somewhat tedious, but a nice relaxing start to the day.

After lunch, I played around with the boss's PDA, as he is a technophobe and has no idea how to use it, so he wants me to learn how to work it so that I can teach him. I played with it for a good three hours, which was a nice waste of time.

Tomorrow I will be installing the new program, updating the contacts, and attempting to sync the new program with the PDA (as that is the main reason why it was purchased). Should be an interesting day, I'm looking forward to it. And I'll be alone for the first half, because my boss has a doctor's appointment in Toronto. Fun fun.

The hours weren't too bad. I was still asleep when I got in at 8 (woke up at 5:30), but I got out around 5:30 so it's all good. I should have a nice paycheck at the end of next week. I'll be opening a savings account that I can't access from my debit so that I can't spend my cash... Just in case.

I'm hopefully seeing Transformers after work tomorrow, but it all depends on whether I can milk some cash out of my parents. Anyways, I need to sleep. Have a great week guys!

-Brandon

I'M ACCEPTED!

I just got an email from York saying. . .

"As you've been given an offer of admission, we'd like to re-confirm important information about what's coming up..."

THAT'S RIGHT KIDS, I've been accepted!!

Oh, I'm so giddy right now. Again!

So I'm officially done school. Well, I was done yesterday, but I got doing stuff so I couldn't post a journal.

My exams went well. They were really long this year, and pretty tough. I did them all as well as possible, but I'm sure I could've put more into it. Hopefully I end off with decent marks.

Yesterday was interesting... After my exam, I was supposed to meet my mom at the mall at around 12:30. She had a doctor's appointment, so she couldn't get me right after the exam. So I started walking, and I came to the intersection that I was supposed to turn at and thought "You know what, I don't want to wait around... I'm just going to walk home." It seemed like a good idea at the time, so I just kept walking past the intersection. I had the way mapped out in my mind, so it didn't seem that bad. And the I got to a point where I realized "Wait... Gill is a really long fucking road. Shit." and by that point I was too far to turn back. So I kept walking... and walking... for four and a half hours.

I didn't get home until 2:30, and my mom was freaked out (because I had no way of contacting her). I wanted to call her and let her know what was going on, I just had no way to do so. When I got home, I called her right away. She was a little upset, but it was all good. Definitely a learning experience.

It was also especially brutal because I had my schoolbag with me (laptop bag, not backpack), and had nothing to drink or eat... Yeah, it was fun.

As for the rest of my week, I'm sleeping in, maybe going to a friend's place to swim, and them partying it up over the long weekend (Canada Day, bitches)! And then I start work on Tuesday. Exciting.

So, there's my update of teh life. Hope you all have a good week, and for all of my Canadian brethren, have a fantastic Canada Day!!

-Brandon

By the way, I'm getting drunk tonight as a celebration of summer's arrival. I have one more exam to go, and then I'm free. I'm not really worried about the exam. Actually, I'm not worried at all. I can't improve my mark enough to change my previous one, so there's no point in worrying about doing well. Unfortunately I still haven't been accepted to York, but whatever; I'll probably be going to Georgian anyway.

As for summer plans, I've got lots. On top of the many parties that are foreseen in these next two months, I have a job!! That's right, I got the job I was talking about in the last entry. It's awesome because Phil's first words when he saw me were "this is a job offering, not a job interview" so that lifted all anxiety out of the air. I will be working full-time; Monday to Friday, 8 to 5, $10 an hour. It's gong to be pretty awesome. As I mentioned before, it will be primarily filing, and other general office help.

I'm excited for the summer. I'll have some cash, and there will be a mountainous amount of parties. And with money, I'll be able to get my license, which means more job opportunities as well as easier party access. Well, summer is almost here (two weeks) and I was getting really nervous, so I emailed the guy. Well, he just replied, and set up a lunch meeting on Tuesday!! I'm excited, it'll be my first job, and it'll be really good. Most importantly, it'll look damn good on a resume, so I'll have more opportunity for jobs after the summer (if I don't get into York).

What I'll be doing, I have yet to know. I must warn you now, I can't guarantee that this will be a spoiler-free review. I try to avoid them, but there are some plot-points that I may bring up. You have been warned.

To start, I believe this to be the best of the trilogy (let's hope it stays a trilogy... fucking Bruckheimer). The first was fantastic, revolutionary. As film_geek puts it "Pirates is the 'Indiana Jones' of this generation". The second was less than stellar... To be honest, I hated it when I first saw it. Watching it a second and third time raised my opinion of it, but it wasn't nearly as good as the first. The biggest problem with the second was that it was messy. At World's End, though still jumpy, keeps on track, and stays with the spirit of the first. The plot wasn't that good (but, to be honest, I don't believe any of the PotC plots were intriguing), but it was the acting, visual effects, and action that brought it up a notch.

The acting was brilliant, especially on Johnny Depp's part, and there are a couple instances during the movie where Jack takes from the pages of one of my favourite movies, Secret Window. Geoffrey Rush was great, though didn't match his performance in the first. Barbossa definitely had his moments, but overall felt somewhat forgotten, though it's not like they could've given him much more screen time. Orlando Bloom and Kira Knightly were just as annoying as they were in the last two, though Will actually seemed determined this time. The two have good chemistry, but the characters have just gotten annoying. Bill Nighy is fucking amazing. He did so well showing the weakness of Davey Jones, whilst staying vicious and somewhat frightening. The biggest problem I found about the second movie was that Jones didn't seem as prominent of a villain as Barbossa, but he makes up for that in this film. All of the other secondary characters were great, except Tia Dalma. She seemed randomly broken from the very beginning, as if she all of a sudden started loving Jones again. Her attitude seemed out-of-place from the second film, and it pissed me off because she was one of my favourite new characters. The new pirates were cool, but again weren't elaborated on as much as I would've liked. Chou Yun-Fat 's character seemed to be a big part, but was forgotten about rather quickly, and then killed off soon after that. I think Depp's performance makes up for all of the bad. He really deserves the Oscar this year.

As for the special effects, they were amazing. Davey Jones looks better than he did in the last film, as do his crew. The ships are fucking awesome. Incomprehensible. The storm and maelstrom were cool as well. I was very impressed. Also (referring to Jack's performance) the numerous Captains were amazing. For one guy acting out over 20 parts, it was uber-impressive, and looked pretty damn real. It was a high-budget pirate movie... there's not much more that can be said. It looked good.

The plot was... meh. As I said before, I've never been to keen on the PotC plots. They're hokey, but the movie is meant to be fun, and it is successful in that sense. The plot doesn't really matter with the Pirate movies, as it is all about the thrill of the action and the love of the characters. It was one of the better plots (whether it is better than the first is still undecided), but it still had its problems.

The action was fun, fast, and amazing. Some of the best sequences I've ever seen. The final sea-battle was epic. I was so impressed, it was fucking awesome. It was so well done... I can't say much more than that. If you don't want to see the movie, whatever, but you need to see this battle. It is the coolest ship fight I've ever seen. YouTube it, pirate it, I don't care. You must watch this sequence.

All in all, it was a good movie. I think that the performances overall push it above the heap, but I still love the first. If anything, they're equal. It will take a second viewing to decide whether it is better. I highly recommend this film, it's easily worth the $10.

By the way, there are a couple things I wanted to mention that don't really fit into the other categories. The opening sequence is amazing. I had shivers, it was awesome. Unfortunately, once it passed, the movie started out a little slow and rocky. Other than that, it was a great ride. Oh, and there are so many sexual references and innuendos... A little edgy for Disney, but still awesome.

I hope you enjoyed the review, and get to see the movie sometime soon. We bought two 20L kegs... that's right, I said TWO KEGS. And we pretty much finished them both (there was maybe a cup of two left in the last one). It was awesome.

The first night was alright. There were a couple people there I had never met before, and other people I hadn't seen for a long time. Unfortunately, the friend who was hosting the party was forced to bring his brother and his little friends. Fucking brats, in my opinion. Anyways, it started to rain, and my friend Wes lives right next door, so we went over to his place to get food and stuff. By the time we were going to head back, it was pouring rain, so we just chilled out at his place and went to sleep. I didn't have a whole lot to drink, but it was still pretty good.

The second day is where it got interesting. I wandered back over around 2, and apparently a couple of my friends headed home to get clothes, food, and other various supplies. When they got back, we started drinking. I was quite drunk before the next group of people showed up and the party started. In fact, we polished off the first keg around 4. We cut down some trees (very scary when intoxicated), found a coyote skeleton (I snagged the femur), got a fuck-ton of wood in preparation for the cold night ahead (as we were not very prepared the previous evening), and played some manhunt. Eventually we got a wicked fire going, and hung out for a couple hours (still drinking, of course).

Around 8 more people started showing up, and the party got going. Unfortunately with the introduction of more people there was more booze, and we had some puking (not by me, thankfully). I met some cool new people, and reunited with old friends. It was a good night. It got a little chilly, but we huddled together and had a good ol' time. And with everyone's help, the cleanup went pretty fast. It was an awesome weekend, and I'm hoping to do the same sort of thing at my place next weekend.

-Brandon

I'M BACK!!

My dad cancelled our old dial-up account with Bell, and for some retardedly random reason, they decided to wipe out our entire internet account. We went to The Keg steakhouse, which was awesome, and I got a wicked speaker system for my compy. I was hanging out with Wes later that night, but it was late and we were both tired, so we didn't drink very much. We crashed pretty early too.

As for Saturday, it was much more eventful. Sarah took me out for dinner at the Fishbowl (though it was early, so it was a challenge to finish), and Sarah continues to be awesome. While eating dinner, she told me that the guys were hoping to celebrate my birthday (by getting completely trashed, of course), which was somewhat of a surprise since I wasn't expecting anything. So we went over to Blair's house after dinner, and sat in his room for a while. Luke then popped on MSN ranting about how he hates York and that he really wants to come hang out. I figured he was joking since he was in Toronto, but Sarah, being the amazingly awesome person she is, offered to drive down and pick him up. So we did that, and got back to Blair's around 12am. I was getting really tired, and hoped I wouldn't pass out as soon as I started drinking. Thankfully, the company was some of the best, so we drank until about 7am. We polished off the 40 of Jack I had bought the day before... (I'll post before/after pictures soon). It was a great night.

Now, I was really looking forward to that Skypecast thing, so I'm a little disappointed that I never got around to hosting it. Perhaps I will finally get around to hosting this thing on some random occasion in the near future. We shall see...

Well, that's it for me. I'm thinking that I will have a couple people over on Friday to enjoy a few drinks (though I plan to get pretty drunk, as expected of my by those tuning into the Skypecast). I'm hoping one of my friends will open up their doors on Saturday and allow me to celebrate properly. We'll see what happens. Anyways, that's it for me. Hope you all have a good week, and I shall post another journal sometime on my birthday (perhaps after the Skypecast). That's right folks, my 19th birthday is in two weeks (April 13). As expected, I'm going to be completely drunk. I was planning on staying home the whole day, to get a head start on the partying, but it seems the school has scheduled a meeting for me on that day, so I have to go in... and I have to be sober (I know, total ripoff). So it looks like I won't be able to start drinking until after 2:00, but whatever. I'm hoping I can hang out with a few friends, if not at my house then some other place (*hint hint*). We'll see...

I want to stay home, at least for part of the night. I'm sure my parents will let me have a few people over, but only time will tell. Anyways, the reason I want to stay home is because a friend of mine from Roosterteeth gave me a great idea. I've set up a Skypecast (open conference call) to take place on the night of my birthday, so you guys (or at least those who have Skype) can chat with me while in my inebriated state. Here's the Skypecast page. This promises to be an unforgettable night... despite the fact that I'm probably going to forget everything!

Crimson Shadow

This is a movie I made with a few friends.
